What you need to buy

Here are some useful tips when looking to buy car insurance:

  • Third-party insurance is not always cheaper than comprehensive and it may cost you more in the long run. If you are involved in an incident with an uninsured driver and if you are unable to prove the other party is liable for the crash you would end up paying the repair bill for your vehicle.

  • Always contact the DVLA and your motor insurance company if you develop any medical conditions that could impair your ability to drive. Otherwise you may find yourself not insured and facing a fine. To find out more, please visit

Maintaining the option to drive after your 80th birthday can make an enormous difference to your independence and quality of life. Everyone needs to get out and about to carry out everyday tasks, and having a car to get you to the shops or to a friend’s house can make those tasks much more simple as we get older.

While the DVLA will ask drivers over 70 to start renewing their licence every 3 years to keep a close eye on any health and safety concerns, there’s no reason why competent drivers can’t continue to use the roads for years after their 80th birthday. In fact, the number of people aged 80 or above on the roads is rising, with over 1.5 million drivers reported to be in this age category in March 2020.

Despite this, some insurance companies have made the decision not to offer policies to drivers after a certain age, or to increase their premiums by high amounts. And so it’s more important than ever to shop around and find an insurer that understands the needs of older drivers. Age Co Car Insurance has been created specifically with mature drives in mind to offer competitive policies to our customers.

Can I get insured after 80?

There are no upper age limits at Age Co Car Insurance, and so you will never be declined cover based on your age alone. However, your circumstances will influence whether we can offer you cover in later life. Elderly customers with a poor claims or convictions history, or who wish to insure a high rated vehicle, may be unable to purchase car insurance. You will also need to be deemed medically fit and safe to drive by the DVLA before we can provide you with insurance services to suit your needs.

Will I get a cheaper car insurance policy for being over 80?

While drivers with more years of experience are often favoured by insurance providers, many drivers notice that their insurance increases when they reach 70. Shopping around for an insurance provider that takes the needs of elderly drivers into consideration is more important than ever at 80, and it may be worth choosing an insurance provider with no upper age limits, that specifically caters for older drivers, to avoid higher prices.

Will my car insurance be affected by my health?

No matter your age, you must report any of the medical conditions outlined by the DVLA both to the DVLA and to your car insurance provider. Some conditions might push the cost of your insurance up, but failing to notify your insurer could result in your policy becoming invalid, a £1000 fine and even prosecution if you’re involved in an accident.

As well as your health, you must monitor your eyesight to ensure that it meets the legal requirements for driving. Free eye tests are available on the NHS for those aged 60 or older so there’s no excuse for getting caught out with the wrong prescription glasses. Not only could this invalidate your car insurance, but it’s extremely dangerous for you and other road-users.

Why choose Age Co Car Insurance for over 80s?

Age Co strive to create the best policies and services to suit the needs of older drivers. Age Co appreciates that the ability to pay monthly and access to a 24-hour accident helpline can make a big difference as you get older, and so these are just some of the benefits that come as standard. A courtesy car is also offered to those with comprehensive cover, and our ‘Message Relay Service’ provides the option for a friend or family member to be contacted if you’re involved in an accident.

Age Co Car Insurance has been awarded the highest possible Star Rating from Defaqto based on customer ratings of quality and comprehensiveness, and has been recognised as a Feefo Gold Trusted Merchant for providing exceptional services to our customers.
