Cover Options

Annual multi-trip

People over 50 are travelling more than ever. If you have two or more trips planned for the year, annual cover can be a cost-effective way of protecting yourself. You’ll save time on taking out multiple single-trip policies, while still receiving all the benefits of comprehensive holiday insurance.
An annual policy can protect you on a range of trips, including beach holidays and snowy getaways. And with our range of cover levels, you can choose the right level of protection for the year ahead.

Single Trip

Designed to cover you over the course of a single holiday, this type of policy is best suited to anyone who only has one trip planned. With Age Co Travel Insurance, even on single trips, you can find coverage for medical emergencies and lost or damaged personal possessions.

You can buy single-trip travel insurance up to 12 months before your holiday. If you include cancellation cover, this means you can protect your trip from the minute your policy starts.

Getting a Quote

In order to get a travel insurance quote, you’ll need to provide:

  • Details about where you plan on travelling
  • Dates for your trip, unless you’re taking out annual travel insurance
  • Information on any pre-existing medical conditions

Though not a requirement, you may find it helpful to have receipts for flights or hotels to hand. This can help you determine how much cover feels right for your trip.

What is not included in over 80s Travel Insurance?

There are certain exclusions that all travellers should be aware of, regardless of age. These include:

  • Undeclared medical conditions: if your holiday is affected by a medical condition that wasn’t disclosed, you could invalidate your policy.
  • Missing your flight: you won’t be able to make a claim if a missed flight was your fault.
Drugs and alcohol: accidents caused while under the influence of drugs or alcohol won’t be covered.
  • High risk activities: unless you take out extra protection, a standard travel insurance policy won’t cover water or winter sports.

Travelling with pre-existing medical conditions

As we get older, there is a higher chance of a medical condition developing. But this doesn’t have to get in the way of your holiday plans.

Age Co Travel Insurance is provided through AllClear, medical condition cover specialists. Together we’re able to help travellers with over 1,300 medical conditions, including:

  • Heart conditions
  • Diabetes
  • Back problems
  • High blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Blood clots
  • Liver disease
  • Breast cancer

Will I have to pass a medical test to get over 80s travel insurance?

It is unlikely that any medical test will be required. While inquiring about a quote, simply declare your known medical conditions to find out what cover options are available for your trip. Never be tempted to omit any conditions, as this can put you at risk of invalidating your policy.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get travel insurance if I’m over 80?

With the right provider, you should be able to find the right protection for you and your holiday. For instance, Age Co Travel Insurance has no upper age limit and a range of cover options to suit a variety of travel plans.

What doesn't over 80s travel insurance cover?

With Age Co, your age won’t exclude you from any of our cover options. What’s excluded from your policy will depend on the level of protection you choose. At Age Co, we offer three levels of travel insurance, as well as a range of extras. If you want to make sure you’re fully protected, it’s worth reading the terms and conditions, so you understand what you’ll be covered for while away. You can also talk to the provider and ask them for more information on your travel insurance options.

How much will over 80s travel insurance cost?

The price of your travel insurance will depend on a number of different variables. Factors that will affect the cost of over 80s Travel Insurance include:

  • Destination
  • Length of stay
  • Medical history
  • Age
  • Planned activities
  • Desired level of coverage

For travellers over 80, who may have a pre-existing condition, you could consider opting for more cost-effective holidays to offset any additional insurance costs if you're on a budget. For instance, holidays in Europe cost less to insure than those in America, due to the latter’s expensive healthcare system. You’ll also find costs go up for cruise holidays, as health emergencies at sea can incur higher costs, and you’ll often need to add extra protection to your standard policy to account for this.

Where can I go with an over 80s insurance policy?

If you’ve got the means to get there, then nowhere is off-limit. However, certain destinations will cause the price of your travel insurance to go up. This will either be down to the high price of healthcare in that country (for instance, the USA ) or because there is a greater risk of catching a disease while aboard (countries known for tropical diseases). For older travellers, it’s worth bearing in mind that you’re unlikely to be covered if you’re travelling against the advice of your doctor.

Can I add medical equipment or my carer to my policy?

Yes. If you’re over 80 and want to bring medical equipment or a carer on your next holiday, Age Co Travel Insurance can help offer protection. Medical equipment is covered as standard on all policies. You can also choose to include Travelling Companion Cover, which is available as an optional extra. Whether your companion is a family member, friend, or carer, this will cover any expenses that occur should you be unable to travel and have to cancel your trip.

Does travel insurance increase when you turn 80?

The cost of travel insurance can increase with age. However, this isn’t the only factor for pricing. Your quote will also be determined by where you plan on travelling to, how long your stay will be, and if you require any extra cover, such as for your gadgets or travelling companion.
Therefore, if you find the cost of travel insurance rising once you’re over 80, it might be worth considering if your holiday plans can be adjusted to reduce costs elsewhere. For instance, travelling to Europe over the United States will have an impact on price.

Does Age Co Travel Insurance have upper age limits?

No. Unlike other insurers, Age Co Travel Insurance has no upper age limit in place.

Do you need Over 80s Travel Insurance if you have a GHIC card?

While The Global Health Insurance (GHIC) card allows UK residents to receive the same level of healthcare in Europe that the locals have access to, this does not replace the need for travel insurance.
The GHIC card doesn’t cover all possible medical costs you may incur, nor protect any medical equipment you may need to bring. It also won’t protect you in the event of cancellations or missed connections.
What’s more, it is only valid in 27 countries. Therefore, it is still recommended to take out travel insurance.

Can someone else join your Travel Insurance policy if they're under 80?

Yes, Age Co Travel Insurance is here to help travellers of all ages. You can add another traveller (or more than one) under the ‘Traveller details’ section while getting a quote.
