2 in 5 Older People Unaware that a no-deal Brexit would mean the end of free health cover for European Holidays

| News

The latest research from Age Co Travel Insurance* has found that 2 in 5 (40%) of over 65s are unaware that the reduced cost of free health cover offered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) when travelling in the EU will no longer be available if there’s a no-deal Brexit.

ABTA, the UK’s largest travel association, is urging all travellers to strongly consider taking out travel insurance - whether there is a no deal Brexit or not. This is because they observe that in any event, EHIC only provides quite limited protection so it is wise to have travel insurance if you are travelling in the EU.

UK motorists planning to drive to other European countries on holiday are also being warned that they may need to apply for the relevant International Driving Permit and, similarly, may need to get a 'green card' in the event of a no-deal Brexit for their car insurance to be applicable in the EU.

Doug Strachan of Age Co Travel Insurance, said: “It’s worrying that so many older people are unaware that a no deal Brexit would spell the end of the European Health Insurance Card and free or reduced cost medical treatment if they become ill while on holiday in the EU. If there is a no deal Brexit our advice to older people who are planning a trip to Europe is to make sure they have travel insurance that really does meet their needs.

"No one wants a nasty surprise about the cost of medical treatment if they are unfortunate enough to become unwell while holidaying on the continent, and taking out good health insurance is the best way of avoiding this from happening.”
