When you reach 80 you have the time to kick back and relax and you’re free to go and explore. Perhaps you’d like to revisit some of your favourite holidays from over the years, or maybe you’re just in search of a bit of sunshine.

Whether you’re a regular traveller, or making a single trip, it’s important that you take out travel insurance that’s right for you, but this is often harder for older travellers.

Can I get insured?

Many insurers charge a premium for older travellers and some have an upper age limit of 79. The reason for this is that travel insurance is calculated based on your level of risk, which largely revolves around your health. As we age, we are more likely to have a history of medical problems and therefore our risk is higher.

However, we believe that age is not a reason to restrict or refuse cover. That’s why Age Co Travel Insurance has been designed with the needs of older people in mind, with no upper age limit and insurance for pre-existing medical conditions wherever possible†.

†Subject to medical screening and acceptance by underwriters. Medical exclusions may apply and acceptance is not guaranteed. Terms, conditions and exclusions apply to this insurance.

What if I have pre-existing medical conditions?

Many people suffer from pre-existing medical conditions, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes, and as we get older the chances of these issues increase.

It's important to declare any pre-existing medical conditions to ensure that you are protected against any eventuality.

It’s unlikely anything will happen to you on your travels, and we hope it doesn’t, but if you don’t take out specialist cover you could be left to deal with a difficult and expensive situation, should something happen.

Things to consider

There are different options available to you when it comes to travel insurance. You should take the time to consider how often you plan to travel. If you’re planning to make regular trips, it could be better value for money to take out an annual multi-trip policy. Or you might be planning just the one trip, in which case you should consider a single trip policy.

Your destination also affects the cost of your cover, as where in the world you’re travelling to also changes your risk factor.

Finally, if you’re going away with family, an Age Co Travel Insurance policy will provide free cover for children under 18**, providing they are named on the policy. So make sure to read the details in case you’re bringing grandchildren along.

Your cover options

There are two types of travel insurance policy to choose from:

Single Trip cover - For those who just want to take a one-off trip. Annual Multi-trip cover  - See if you could save money by taking out an annual policy.

Other options available:

  • Groups – special discounts are available for groups of ten or more adults travelling together in the United Kingdom and insured under the same policy.
  • Winter sports cover – can be added to your Single Trip policy for an extra premium, and is included automatically up to 17 days under the Annual Multi-trip policy.
  • Do you want to remove the excess? It will add a small extra cost to your premium, but it means you won’t need to pay the first portion of any claim you may make.

Age Co also offers Travel Insurance for those with medical conditions.

Travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions is specialist cover for older travellers with a history of illness. It’s different to standard travel insurance which only usually covers you against medical emergencies.

Many people suffer from pre-existing medical conditions, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoarthritis or asthma. Pre-existing cover is designed to ensure that your costs will be covered should you fall ill whilst travelling.
