You might be thinking about revisiting some of the travel hotspots from your youth, or maybe you’re finally considering that safari holiday, or a big trip down under. Whatever the destination, it’s important that you have travel insurance that covers you for every eventuality, but being an older traveller can sometimes pose difficulties when it comes to getting insured.

Can I get insured?

In our youth the cost of travel insurance didn’t vary much, but as you reach 65 many insurers charge a premium. This is because travel insurance is calculated based on the traveller’s level of risk, which mostly comes down to our health. As older travellers we are more likely to have medical conditions and therefore our risk increases.

However, Age Co believe that age is not a reason to restrict or refuse cover. A refreshed desire to travel after reaching your retirement should not be rewarded with costly restrictions. That's why Age Co Travel Insurance has been designed to meet the needs of those in later life, including no upper age limits and insurance for pre-existing medical conditions wherever possible**.

What if I have pre-existing medical conditions?

It’s quite likely that you will have pre-existing medical conditions as you get older and it's important to declare these to ensure that you are protected against any eventuality.

Many people suffer from pre-existing medical conditions, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. While it’s quite unlikely that anything will happen to you on your travels, it’s important that you take out the correct level of cover to ensure that you’re not left in a difficult situation should something happen. Plus, if you take out travel insurance at the point of booking, in most cases it’ll also cover against cancellation should your circumstances change.

Things to consider

It’s worth thinking about how often you plan to travel before taking out travel insurance. For instance, if you’re planning to make the most out of your newly found sense of adventure, you might get better value for money by taking out an annual multi-trip policy.

You should also consider what you’re planning to do whilst on holiday. You might be thinking about doing activities, such as skiing, which requires a different level of cover.

Lastly, your destination will also impact the cost of your insurance as it changes your level of risk.

Your cover options

There are two types of travel insurance policy to choose from:

Single Trip cover - For those who just want to take a one-off trip. Annual Multi-trip cover  - See if you could save money by taking out an annual policy.

Other options available:

  • Groups – special discounts are available for groups of ten or more adults travelling together in the United Kingdom and insured under the same policy.
  • Winter sports cover – can be added for an extra cost to a Single Trip policy, and is included automatically up to 17 days under the Annual Multi-trip policy.
  • Do you want to remove the excess? It will add a small extra cost to your premium, but it means you won’t need to pay the first portion of any claim you may make.
